Who is God?

Who is God?

Many people throughout history have attempted to answer this question, but what is the DEFINITIVE answer?  Who is, in fact, the TRUE God?

In the history of mankind there is only ONE man who said ‘I and God are ONE’.
This man is Jesus Christ.

As recorded in John 10:30, Jesus said ‘I and the Father are one.’

How do we know Jesus Christ’s claim to be one with God is truthful?

To answer this question, let’s first examine the definition of God in the dictionary: God is ‘a superhuman being with power over nature and human affairs.’

In order to substantiate the claim that He is God, Jesus must demonstrate that He has power over nature and human affairs.

Does He do this?  The answer is YES.

1. Jesus walked on water as recorded in Matthew 14:22-33 and John 6:19.

When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat,
walking on the water; and they were frightened. (John 6:19)

When the disciples saw Him walking on the lake, they were terrified. (Matthew 14:26)

 2. Jesus changed water into wine as recorded in John 2:1-11.

On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and His disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to Him, “They have no more wine.” “Woman, why do you involve Me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever He tells you.” Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.
Then He told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.” What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which He revealed His glory; and His disciples believed in Him.

 3. Jesus opened the eyes of a man born blind as recorded in John 9:1-38.
He [the man born blind] replied, “Whether He is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!”.

4. Jesus stilled the storm as recorded in Matthew 8:23-27.
Then He got into the boat and His disciples followed Him. Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey Him!”

These are just a few of the miracles Jesus performed among many others.  A complete list of miracles that Jesus performed as recorded in the Bible is contained in this article: Miracles of Jesus

What is the most distinctive miracle that demonstrates Jesus Christ to be the TRUE GOD?
We know that according to recorded history up to the time of Jesus, NO ONE had ever raised a person from the dead.

Does Jesus do this?  The answer is YES.

1. Jesus raised the widow’s son from the dead as recorded in Luke 7:11-18.
Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and His disciples and a large crowd went along with Him. As He approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her, His heart went out to her and He said, “Don’t cry.” Then He went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother. They were all filled with awe and praised God. “A great prophet has appeared among us,” they said.  “God has come to help his people.” This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.  John’s disciples told him about all these things.

2. Jesus raised the ruler’s daughter from the dead as recorded in Matthew 9:18-26.
While He was saying this, a synagogue leader came and knelt before Him and said, “My daughter has just died. But come and put your hand on her, and she will live.” Jesus got up and went with him, and so did His disciples.  Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak. She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.” Jesus turned and saw her. “Take heart, daughter,” He said, “your faith has healed you.” And the woman was healed at that moment. When Jesus entered the synagogue leader’s house and saw the noisy crowd and people playing pipes, he said, “Go away. The girl is not dead but asleep.” But they laughed at Him. After the crowd had been put outside, He went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up. News of this spread through all that region.

3. Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead as recorded in John 11:1-46.

When He had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazaruscome out!” The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”

In fact, Jesus Himself says:

The works I do in My Father’s name testify about Me. (John 10:25)

and

What about the One Whom the Father set apart as His very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse Me of blasphemy because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’? Do not believe Me unless I do the works of my Father. But if I do them, even though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father. (John 10:36-38)

Not only did Jesus raise others from the dead, but He Himself was raised from the dead by His Heavenly Father.  This is the distinctive mark of God’s almighty power and proves beyond any doubt that Jesus Christ is the Son of the Living God. In fact, God Himself clearly states that Jesus is His Son as we read in Matthew 3:16-17:

As soon as Jesus was baptized, He went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on Him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased.”

and

For He has set a day when He will judge the world with justice by the Man [Jesus Christ] He has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising Him from the dead. (Acts 17:31)

In addition, God challenges mankind, stating clearly that He is the one and only God as we read in the following Bible passages…

This is what the Lord says — Israel’s King and Redeemer, the Lord Almighty:
I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God.
Who then is like Me? Let him proclaim it.
Let him declare and lay out before Me what has happened since I established my ancient people,
and what is yet to come—yes, let them foretell what will come. (Isaiah 44:6-7)

——

This is what the Lord says — your Redeemer, who formed you in the womb:
I am the Lord, the Maker of all things,
who stretches out the heavens,
who spreads out the earth by Myself,
who foils the signs of false prophets and makes fools of diviners,
who overthrows the learning of the wise and turns it into nonsense,
who carries out the words of His servants and fulfills the predictions of his messengers,
who says of Jerusalem, ‘It shall be inhabited,’ of the towns of Judah, ‘They shall be rebuilt,’
and of their ruins, ‘I will restore them.’ (Isaiah 44:24-26)

——

This is what the Lord says — the Holy One of Israel, and its Maker:
Concerning things to come, do you question Me about my children,
or give Me orders about the work of My hands?
It is I who made the earth and created mankind on it.
My own hands stretched out the heavens;
I marshaled their starry hosts.
(Isaiah 45:11-12)

——

I am the Lord, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God.
I will strengthen you, though you have not acknowledged Me,
so that from the rising of the sun to the place of its setting
people may know there is none besides Me.
I am the Lord, and there is no other.
I form the light and create darkness,
I bring prosperity and create disaster;
I, the Lord, do all these things.
(Isaiah 45:5-7)

——

The Lord is the true God; He is the living God, the eternal King.
When He is angry, the earth trembles; the nations cannot endure His wrath. (Jeremiah 10:10)

——

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in Me will live,

even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in Me will never die.”
(John 11:25-26)

——

When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said,

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness,

but will have the light of life.”

(John 8:12)

——

I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.
Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life
and may go through the gates into the city. Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts,
the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.
(Revelation 23:13-14)

Now that you know the TRUTH, let the TRUTH set you FREE!
